Ecology and evolution

Coordinators 2023-2024 : Henrique TEOTONIO, Kévin JEAN

The M2 program in Ecology and Evolution provides advanced academic training for second-year Master’s students in areas such as evolution, ecology, environmental sciences, evolutionary genetics, and genomics.
The curriculum is subdivided into 2 sub-tracks, which allows students to specialize either into evolutionary genetics or ecology, while also allowing for a more hybrid and personalized cursus.

This program is designed for students with a strong foundation in mathematics, computer science, or biology, combined with a keen interest in ecological and evolutionary theory.

The M2 training serves as a springboard to pursue a PhD and an academic career in fields such as evolution, ecology, epidemiology, health, genetics, genomics, and agroecology. It also prepares students for roles in the private sector as analysts or consultants in biotechnology, health, environmental sciences, food industries, or any sector working with complex data.

Provisional planning 2026-2027

At least 18 ECTS have to be taken from your selected track.

First semester : 30 ECTS

Evolutionary Genetics (EvoGEM) subtrack

Refer to the EvoGEM website

Subtrack coordinator 2023-2024 : Henrique TEOTONIO

The Master 2 EvoGEM (Evolution of Genomes, Populations and Species : Data and Models) is an inter-institutional and inter-disciplinary training program equipping students with a solid basis in evolutionary genetics and a specialization in modeling, mathematics, bioinformatics and genomics.
The courses are offered by various Parisian institutions : Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, PSL/ENS*, Sorbonne University, Université Paris-Cité and Université Paris-Saclay.

The genomic approach has transformed nearly every domain of Life Sciences, with applications spanning medicine, epidemiology, ecology, microbiology, breeding and conservation biology.
Today, research in these fields increasingly relies on ecological and evolutionary sciences, necessitating significant theoretical and methodological advancements. These are critical for integrating the complexity and heterogeneity of data, as well as deepening our understanding of evolutionary mechanisms across populations, species, and ecosystems.

* IMaLiS EvoGem students will obtain their degree from the PSL Master in Life Sciences.

Ecology subtrack

Subtrack coordinator 2023-2024 : Kevin JEAN

The IMaLiS Master Ecology sub-track is a forward-thinking program designed to tackle the key ecological challenges posed by global environmental change.
By combining theoretical knowledge with innovative research and practical applications, this interdisciplinary program provides students with an in-depth understanding of ecological processes and environmental systems. It equips them with the analytical tools and methodologies required to address complex ecological problems.
The curriculum highlights the intricate relationships between biodiversity, ecosystem functionality, and human impacts within the Anthropocene era.
With a dual focus on terrestrial and marine ecosystems, the program prepares students to confront critical issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss and the profound connections between ecosystem health and human well-being.

Second semester : 30 ECTS

Long internship (5 months, 30 ECTS)
